Introduction
Terra Cotcha is a collection of self-watering planters made from natural materials. It is a combination of a glass vessel and terracotta clay inner pot for a self watering principle for plants. The inspiration came from the thousands of years old Olla irrigation system where unglazed terracotta pots are buried in soil. The microporous terracotta walls does not allow water to flow freely, but guides seepage in the direction where suction develops. In the planter this principle has been reversed enabling the plant to absorb water as desired through the terracotta from the glass reservoir, thus avoiding that there’s too much or too little water intake. By making the reservoir relatively large it takes between 30 to 50 days, before it needs to be refilled (depending on the plant type, season and placement). The water level is visible through the reservoir, so you can see when it’s time to refill; this can be done by opening the seal. Because the water hardly comes in contact with air, there are no algae development. Overall this system is better for root systems of plants; it promotes deep watering and dense root growth which facilitates more efficient nutrient and water intake. The planters have a widely appealing contemporary design in combination with classic materials.
