Introduction
Plover is a chair designed for the 21st Century where education and work spaces demand agility, mobility, and flexibility. As we move into the digital age, the way we learn and work change, and we were inspired by this change to design a chair that would adapt to the new behaviour and culture. Its name plays on its distinctive single- or group-use feature with analogy to the bird’s duality of solitary and social nature.
Plover is agile, because it encourages freedom in sitting posture which is understood to stimulate one’s creativity. There is proven scientific research that our body and mind are connected, thus how we behave physically has significant effect on our how behave mentally: staying still tends to clear our mind; being active tends to invigorate our brain. The chair’s design encourages at least five different ways of repose. The protruding backrest, as an instance, can be a worktop for user sitting in reverse in one and a high stool in another.
Plover is mobile, because it is robust enough for day-to-day dynamic and intensive use yet visually and practically lightweight. At just 8kg, it can be deployed from storage and moved into any arrangement with ease. In store the chair stacks extremely efficiently at up to 32 chairs on one trolley, occupying a footprint not much more than that of a single chair. The chair comes with gliders for moving on both soft and hard flooring, and we have development plan for alternative leg options such as a castor fitted one.
Plover is flexible, because it can be used both individually and collectively to aid brainstorming and co-creation in events such as workshops and seminars. Individually, it supports the user in various reposes and assists tasks that require a casual worktop. Collectively, they work in confluence to form endless possibilities of sitting, crouching, leaning, treading, and at the same time a furniture setup that allow informal yet engaging discussions. Plover demonstrates how design can be simple yet exemplary in bringing people closer together.
